Forbid Resizing a Window

SUMMARY: If a terminal session in PuTTY needs to be a required width and height, preventing resizing may prevent problems in remote applications.

By default when you access remote computers with PuTTY, you can resize the terminal window. This can change the number of rows and columns in the PuTTY window, and remote applications may recognize this terminal change and alter their displays accordingly.

In some situations remote applications may not handle this resize gracefully, causing problems such as corrupted displays or application crashes. Thus you can disallow window resizing:

1. Open PuTTY.

2. Click on the "Session" link in the left pane.

3. In the right pane, click "Default Settings", or a defined session, then the "Load" button.

4. Click on "Window" in the left pane.

5. In the right pane, underneath "When window is resized", click the "Forbid resizing completely" radio button. Alternatively, you can support window resizing that only changes the font size on your machine and not the rows and columns of the terminal session reported to the remote machine. In this case, click the "Change the size of the font" radio button.

6. Click on the "Session" link in the left pane.

7. Choose the session name you chose in #3, or "Default Settings".

8. Click the "Save" button.

Note that if you change the default settings, you will still need to change the settings for each saved PuTTY session.
