QuickTime for Windows - Turn off Automatic Update Checking

SUMMARY: Don't want QuickTime for Windows to "phone home" and check for updates?

These instructions were written for QuickTime 7.1.5. Instructions and screenshots for other versions may vary.

By default, QuickTime for Windows will periodically "phone home" and check for updates.

While the updater is supposed to help ensure you receive security hotfixes and other updates to the software, it does not work 100% of the time. For example, to upgrade from QuickTime 7.1 to QuickTime 7.1.5 I had to download and install the update manually.

If you would like to disable this update feature, reducing the amount of time QuickTime for Windows "phones home", do the following:

Note that if you disable the update checking, you should still periodically manually check for updates! You can do this via the Control Panel, but I also recommend occasionally visiting the QuickTime for Windows website in case the updater fails to function.

1. Open the QuickTime for Windows Control Panel applet.

2. When the "QuickTime Preferences" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Update" tab.

3. Uncheck "Check for updates automatically".

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
