By default, QuickTime for Windows will periodically "phone home" and check for updates. While the updater is supposed to help ensure you receive security hotfixes and other updates to the software, it does not work 100% of the time. For example, to upgrade from QuickTime 7.1 to QuickTime 7.1.5 I had to download and install the update manually. If you would like to disable this update feature, reducing the amount of time QuickTime for Windows "phones home", do the following:
1. Open the QuickTime for Windows Control Panel applet. 2. When the "QuickTime Preferences" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Update" tab. 3. Uncheck "Check for updates automatically". 4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box. |
