How Much Money Did a Movie Really Make?

SUMMARY: View the USA box office returns of movies, adjusted for inflation.

Many websites including Yahoo! offer a list of the top-grossing USA films of all-time. Recent films such as "Titanic", "Shrek 2", and "Spider-Man" are near the top of the list, but does that truly represent the films' popularity? "Gone with the Wind", as of January 9, 2006, is 66th on the list, but shouldn't the difference of ticket prices between 1939 and the late 90's and 2000's be taken into account?

The following websites attempt to answer this question by listing the top grossing USA films of all time, adjusting for inflation. After all, ticket prices in 1939 were far, far less than they were in 1997, so older movies that made much less money than their newer brethren may have actually attracted more viewers. Note that this is not an exact science; many movies have been re-released and re-re-released since their original showtimes.
