| Restaurants for the Locals SUMMARY: Eat at some of the more unique locations around the US. Planning on taking a trip in the near future and don't want to scarf down fast food or dine at another one of those "casual dining restaurants" where it looks like the owner threw the contents of a garage sale up on the walls? Would you like to sample local cuisine and not the usual "tourist trap" fare?
Roadfood.com lists "the most memorable local eateries along the highways and back roads of America". It lists 1,000 local eateries across the United States and lets you talk about or review each and every one you have visited. You can search by state, cuisine type, or use their advanced search to find restaurants by city, keyword, or specialty food item.
Restaurant detail pages show ratings (including an interesting "miles worth driving" rating), reviews, and the restaurants' hours and store policies. Many also show photos of the restaurant and/or food and a sample menu.
Examples of listed places where I have dined:
In Knoxville, TN, Roadfood.com lists Litton's, a place familiar to locals due to its hamburgers. Nearby is the Fountain City Duck Pond, a nice place for families.
In Atlanta, GA, Roadfood.com lists The Varsity, a drive-in restaurant and Georgia Tech tradition well-known for their hot dogs. "What'll You Have? What'll You Have?"
Visiting New York, New York? Roadfood.com, of course, lists the famous Katz's Delicatessen. Open since 1888, the pastrami sandwiches and pickles are specialties. "Send a salami to your boy in the army!"
A visit to Chicago isn't complete without visiting Pizzeria Uno. Just be prepared to wait a while to grab a seat. Water Tower Place is nearby if you want to shop, and the Old Water Tower makes a great photograph.
