| Close Down Other Software Before Scanning SUMMARY: Shutting down other software while scanning large documents may speed up the scanning process.
Plan on scanning a large document or a photo into a high-resolution file? You may want to consider closing down other software packages first (after saving information, of course).
When you scan a large document, normally the information is copied to memory, and then stored on disk. If you have many other software programs open, taking up huge chunks of memory, you will more than likely experience thrashing, the temporary transfer of software or information from memory to disk that makes room for the scanned information. Since storing information to disk can take time, this "virtual memory" thrashing can greatly increase the scan time.
