| Talk to Your Kids and Others Sharing Your Machine About Spyware SUMMARY: If others share your computer, make sure they know about the potential problems that can occur when downloading software. If your computer is used by your children and/or others, it may be a good idea to discuss with them the potential problems of spyware. Mention to them that although free downloadable games and toolbars seem like fun things to get, they may be exposing your machine to unwanted intruders. Worse, if you store private information on your PC, spyware, viruses, and other malware could allow malicious people unfettered access to all of your data, increasing your risk of identity theft.
If you use Windows XP, one option is to set up limited accounts for others accessing your machine. This will help protect your computer from others installing applications on your machine, but it may keep them from accessing some legitimate websites.
