Winamp 2
SUMMARY: Help with the unsupported version 2 of the Winamp multimedia player.
Downloading Winamp 2
Winamp 2 is an unsupported version of Winamp. If you wish to download the older version of Winamp, the following download location MAY work.
Winamp - OldVersion.com - http://www.oldversion.com/Winamp.html
Randomize Your Playlist
There are a couple of ways you can randomize your WinAmp playlist:
1) Literally randomize the order of your playlist. Click the "Misc" button, then "Sort List", then "Randomize List".
2) Run your playlist in "Shuffle" mode, randomizing which song comes next. Just click the "Shuffle" button and your songs will no longer be played in sequential order.
Shortcut to Minimize Winamp
If you have a hard time minimizing Winamp 2.9x (it can be hard positioning your mouse on the tiny minimize button on Winamp's title bar!) just press ALT-M. Simple and effective
Create a Playlist Webpage
If you'd like, you can create a webpage containing the lists of the files in your current Winamp playlist. This webpage will list each song's name, the total number of songs, the total playlist length, and more.
To generate this webpage, open Winamp and create or load your playlist. Double-click the "Misc" button and choose "Generate HTML Playlist". Then, check your TEMP directory (under Windows 2000 or XP, it may be under C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE\Local Settings\Temp) for the playlist HTM file. Once you find and open the correct file, copy the file somewhere else on your hard drive with a new name so you won't forget where it is.
Speed up Winamp
If your computer is slowing down when playing music with Winamp, here are a few small things you can do to speed things up.
Right-click on the Winamp window, choose "Options", then "Preferences". The Winamp Preferences window should appear.
1. Choose "Options - Display". Uncheck "Use bitmap font for main title display (no int. support)".
2. Choose "Options - Visualization". Under "Visualization Mode", click the "Off" radio button.
3. Choose "Options". Under "Process priority class", scroll the slider to the left to cause Winamp to use less of your CPU time. Note that your songs may sound more stuttered. Scroll the slider to the right to cause Winamp to use more of your CPU time. Note that this may slow the rest of your computer operations down.
4. Also on the "Options" menu. Click the radio button "Play" next to "Read titles". This stops the background process that Winamp runs to display the song title information.
5. Close the "Preferences" window. Right-click on the song name in the main window and uncheck "Autoscroll Songname".
Browse the Web from within Winamp
Who needs to open Internet Explorer when you're running Winamp? If you'd like to browse the web, just press ALT-T to open a miniature browser. Granted, it's not a full-featured replacement of Internet Explorer, but if you just want to quickly search for an artist's homepage or to check the latest weather, this mini-browser may be all you need.
Add Windows Icons to Winamp
When you set up Winamp, you may have decided not to set up Winamp icons on the Start Menu, Desktop, or QuickLaunch. Or, you may have had Winamp set up such icons and you may have accidentally deleted them. Want to get these shortcut icons back?
1. Open Winamp.
2. Right-click on the Winamp window, choose "Options", then "Preferences".
3. When the "Winamp Preferences" window appears, click the "Setup" text on the left pane.
4. You'll then see buttons allowing you to add Winamp icons as you deem appropriate.
Make Winamp Big and Readable
Are the buttons and text in Winamp too difficult to read? Press CONTROL-D to double the size of the main Winamp window (this only affects this window and not your playback list). Now, it should be easy to differentiate the start and stop buttons, among others.
Bookmark Media Files for Later Access
You can bookmark multimedia files in Winamp, creating a "Favorites"-like menu.
To bookmark a multimedia file, select it in the play-list window and press ALT-I.
To play a file from your bookmarks, right-click on the main Winamp menu, choose "Play", then "Bookmark", then select the name of your desired file.
To edit your bookmarks list, press CONTROL-ALT-I from within Winamp. You can edit or remove entries, or you can "Open" entries (to play the file) or "Enqueue" entries to add them to your current play-list.
If you want further bookmark capabilities, consider browsing the Winamp plug-ins at http://classic.winamp.com/plugins/ and searching for "bookmark". Several multimedia file organization tools are available for download.
Improve MP3 Playback Sound Quality
Don't like the sound quality of music files played through Winamp? You may want to visit Winamp's webpage at http://www.winamp.com and search the version 2-compatible plug-ins. There you'll find plug-ins that provide Winamp with all types of surround sound effects. Check out the links underneath "Output Plug-ins" and "DSP/Effect" and try your luck with many available plug-ins that may even make your laptop or desktop speakers sound better. For example, the SoftAmp VirtualSound plug-in provides four virtual speakers that you can move around and adjust onscreen - even while music is being played.
Netscape Winamp?
I recently installed Netscape on my system as a backup web browser. The upgrade went well. However, I was quite surprised to notice that as soon as I opened Winamp, it came up with a light-blue and light-gray look and was labeled "Netscape Winamp". I don't recall asking for this change!
If this happens to you, just right-click on the Winamp title bar, choose "Skins", then "Base Skin" (or another skin if you so prefer). Winamp should return back to normal.
Display All the Keyboard Shortcuts
Winamp has many keyboard shortcuts for controlling playback, modifying the play-list, changing equalizer options, etc. Many of these shortcuts may be much easier to use than clicking on Winamp's tiny buttons, but how can you remember them all?
Here's how to find a cheat-sheet.
Right-click on the Winamp title bar and choose "NullSoft Winamp". When the "About Winamp" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Keyboard shortcuts" tab. Voila!
