Keep Multiple Folders Open in Explorer - Open Them in New Windows

SUMMARY: When performing file management in Windows 7, open Explorer folders in new windows.

If you are performing extensive directory and file management in Windows 7, you may find the default behavior of opening Explorer folders in the same window irksome. When moving files from one directory to another, you may find it much easier to have the source and destination folders open rather than using the Cut and Paste features.

You can temporarily open a folder in a new window by holding down the Ctrl key when opening the folder, or right-clicking the folder and choosing "Open in new window". However, what if you want this to be the default behavior?

1. Click the Start button, type folder options and click the "Folder Options" link that appears.

2. When the "Folder Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, make sure the "General" tab is selected.

3. Underneath "Browse folders", click the "Open each folder in its own window" radio button.

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

When you change this behavior, holding down the Ctrl key when opening a folder now opens it in the same window.
