SUMMARY: Configure Windows 98 to respond to presses of the power button as if you wanted to put your computer in Standby mode.
Normally, if you press the power button on your machine, Windows shuts the computer down. However, you may prefer to turn this button into one that puts the computer in Standby mode. This uses some power though less than if the computer stayed on, and restarts a lot quicker than if you just shut the machine down.
1. Click "Start" - "Settings" - "Control Panel".
2. Double-click "Power Management" in the "Control Panel" dialog box.
3. When the "Power Management" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select "Advanced".
4. Underneath "When I press the power button on my computer", click the pulldown and change "Shutdown" to "Standy".
5. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.
If these options are not available, either your computer does not support integrated power management, or you need to upgrade Windows 98 to the latest Service Pack.
