Windows Live Mail

Configure Whether to Always or Never Send Read Receipts

SUMMARY: If you tire of seeing read receipt prompts, configure Windows Live Mail to either always send receipts without prompting or ignore the requests.

When receiving e-mail in Windows Live Mail that contain read receipt requests, by default you are prompted on each request. If you tire of these prompts, you can configure the software to always send receipts or never do so. If you choose to always send receipts, you can still configure the software to not send receipts when the original mail was sent to a mailing list and you are not listed as a primary or carbon copy recipient.

1. Access the Windows Live Mail menu by clicking the menu button (see the screenshot to the right) or press Alt + M.

2. Select "Options".

3. The "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears. Select the "Receipts" tab.

4. Underneath "Returning Read Receipts", choose from one of the following radio buttons:

* Never send a read receipt

* Notify me for each read receipt request

* Always send a read receipt

If you choose the later, keep the below checkbox checked to prevent read receipts from going out to e-mail that was sent to a mailing list without you listed as a primary or carbon copy recipient.

5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

EXPERT USERS: The Registry Entries for these configuration items can be found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\SendMDN

1: Always send a read receipt
2: Never send a read receipt
4: Notify me for each read receipt request

If the value is 1, the following registry entry is used:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\SendReceiptToList

0: Send receipts to mailing lists
1: (unless it is sent to a mailing list and my name is not on the To or Cc lines of the message)
