Windows XP Taskbar - Toolbar - Start Menu - Change How My Documents Are Displayed on the Start Menu

SUMMARY: Change how My Documents are displayed on the Windows XP Start Menu, or remove the link altogether.

Depending on your configuration, when clicking the "Start" button, a link to "My Documents" may appear, giving you access to your "My Documents" folder. This folder is used by many people to store Office documents such as texts, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Instead of displaying a simple link to the "My Documents" folder, you could have the Start Menu automatically expand the contents of this folder, allowing access to files with fewer clicks. Alternatively, if you do not use the "My Documents" folder, you may wish to remove this link.

1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar, choosing "Properties".

2. The multi-tabbed "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box appears. Click the "Start Menu" tab.

3. Make sure the "Start Menu" radio button is checked, and then click its "Customize" button.

4. The multi-tabbed "Customize Start Menu" dialog box appears. Click the "Advanced" tab.

5. Underneath "Start menu items" scroll down to "My Documents". Choose either to display a link to "My Documents", a menu to the "My Documents" items, or not to display this item at all in the Start Menu.

6. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.
