CD Ripping Step-By-Step

SUMMARY: Step-by-step how to rip CDs into multimedia files with Windows Media Player 10.


 

Interested in converting your CD collection to digital music files that can be played on your computer and digital media devices? If so, download and install Windows Media Player 10 as per the tips on MalekTips. This version of Windows Media Player 10 makes it easy to convert your CDs into a digital music library. Once Windows Media Player 10 is installed, follow these instructions:

1. Insert your CD to rip.

2. Windows Media Player 10 should appear. Click the "Rip" tab.

3. If no media information appears with song and album titles, you should change your privacy settings:

i. Right-click the title bar, choosing "Tools" - "Options".

ii. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Privacy" tab.

iii. Check "Display media information from the Internet".

iv. Click "OK".

v. Re-insert the CD to rip.

4. Once your media information appears, click the "Rip Music" button.

5. Read the "Rip Options" dialog box that follows, and click the "Keep my current format settings" radio button.

6. Click "OK" to start the ripping process.

7. You should see each track being ripped. When the ripping is done, tracks will be in folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew Malek\My Documents\My Music".

Note that Windows Media Player 10 normally rips music into Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. TO change this and other settings, read on the other tips in this section for details.
