During the Windows Media Player 10 upgrade, a "Customize the Installation Options" dialog will appear. When it does, click the "More Options" tab. Uncheck boxes "Add a shortcut to the desktop" and "Add a shortcut to the Quick Launch bar" to prevent Windows Media Player 10 from creating such shortcuts.
