Windows Media Player 10 Security and Privacy

Do Not Send ID to Content Providers

SUMMARY: To help protect your privacy, prevent a Windows Media Player 10 ID from being transmitted to content providers

Windows Media Player 10 may be configured to send an ID to places that provide multimedia content. According to the help file, this information may be used to gather statistics and possibly "improve the playback quality and to provide additional services". However, although this ID should not allow content providers to get access to your personal information, if you do not want them getting a unique ID from your computer, do the following:

1. Right-click on the Windows Media Player 10 title bar, choosing "Tools" - "Options".

2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Privacy" tab.

3. Underneath "Enhanced Content Provider Services", uncheck "Send unique Player ID to content providers".

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
