Windows Vista - Mouse

Wheel Scrolls Too Fast or Not Fast Enough

SUMMARY: Toggle the scrolling speed of wheel mice on Windows Vista systems.

If you own a wheel mouse, Windows Vista defaults to scrolling through 3 lines of a document, webpage, etc. at a time when you scroll the wheel up or down. If you happen to have a horizontal wheel mouse, tilting the wheel will move three characters to the left or right.

Depending on your needs, this scrolling may be too fast or not fast enough. To tweak this behavior:

1. Open the Windows Vista "Mouse Properties" dialog box.

2. Click the "Pointer Options" tab.

3. Underneath "Vertical Scrolling", choose whether or not to scroll through a few lines at a time or a full page at a time. The latter is best if you often work with extremely large documents and are very careful when flicking the wheel.

If you decide to scroll a certain number of lines at a time, click the box underneath "The following number of lines at a time" to change this behavior. 1 line is the slowest scrolling; 100 is the fastest.

4. If you have a horizontal mouse, you can change the behavior underneath "Horizontal Scrolling". While you cannot scroll a horizontal page width at a time, you can choose to scroll between 1 (slowest) and 100 (fastest) characters.

5. When done, click "OK" to close the "Mouse Properties" dialog box.
