Wireless Internet

Diagnosing No Connection

SUMMARY: A quick checklist if you cannot connect to a wireless network.

Are you unable to connect to a wireless network? Here are a few basics you should check.

1. Does your computer have a built-in wireless connection, versus a wireless USB adapter? If so, check to see if your computer has a switch or button that needs to be enabled or pressed to enable wireless connectivity. For example, on some Sony Vaio models, a switch on the front of the laptop turns wireless networking on or off.

2. Try moving your computer around. Some buildings may have "dead zones" where the wireless signal is blocked or very weak.

3. Check your wireless card's software to see if any networks are in range, and if so, try to reconnect to the desired network. Instructions for doing so may differ depending on your wireless card's driver and software.

If you are using Windows XP, on the other hand, you should see a wireless connectivity icon in the system tray area. Right-click it and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". From here you can see which networks are in range, and if your desired network is reachable, double-click it to attempt connection.
