WinZip - WinZip 10.x - ZIP File Too Big to Fit on a Disk?

SUMMARY: Use WinZip to transport files that are too big to fit on a single floppy, ZIP disk, or CD-Rom.

Is a ZIP file too big to fit on a floppy disk, ZIP disk, CD-Rom, or other type of removable media? If so, WinZip has a Split feature that will let you chop the ZIP file into pieces that can fit on multiple media.

1. First, use WinZip to pen the large zip file in question.

2. From the Classic interface, select "Actions" - "Split" or press SHIFT-H.

3. A "Split" dialog box will appear. Select the directory that will contain your output files.

4. Type in your desired ZIP filename.

5. Underneath "Part Size", select a part size equal, or a little less, than the size of your removable media. If you want, select "Other Size" and choose your own custom ZIP file size in bytes, kilobytes, or megabytes.

6. When you are done, press "OK".

Now, you can copy your ZIP file onto multiple disks. The main ZIP file will be named YOUR_FILENAME.zip. The second chunk will be named YOUR_FILENAME.z01, the third (if applicable) YOUR_FILENAME.z02, etc.

One caveat:

* To later unzip the file completely, make sure you have all of the ZIP file chunks! Lose one chunk and WinZip won't be able to recover some of the files, no matter if you have a ZIP file recovery application or not.
