SUMMARY: Prevent Windows XP from automatically connecting to a particular wireless network when it senses it is in range.
When you connect to a wireless network for the first time in Windows XP, future accesses may become automatic. Windows will keep the name of the network in a list, automatically connecting to it in the future if it senses it is the most preferred network in range.
While network automatic connecting may prove convenient, especially if you switch between different wi-fi hotspots, this connecting may prove to be a security risk. Rogue networks may be created that share the names of common networks, such as "linksys" or "router". Your computer might automatically connect to these rogue networks, potentially opening your computer up to attacks or your information to possible identity theft if you use these pirate networks. Thus, you may wish to turn this "feature" off and only connect to networks manually.
1. Right-click on the wireless network icon in the Windows Taskbar and choose "View Available Wireless Networks".
If this icon is not available, re-enable the network icon in the System Tray area of the Windows XP Taskbar.
2. When the "Wireless Network Connection" window appears, click "Change the order of preferred networks".
3. The "Wireless Network Connection Properties" or similar dialog box should appear. Note that if "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is unchecked, you may not be able to use this tip - refer to your proprietary wireless network connection software.
4. Underneath "Preferred networks", repeat the following for each connection that is labeled "Automatic":
* Click on the connection and then "Properties".
Changing the properties of a preferred wireless network in Windows XP
* A properties dialog box will appear. Click the "Connection" tab.
* Uncheck "Connect when this network is in range".
* Click "OK" to close the properties dialog box.
Disabling connecting to a wireless network when it is within range
* If prompted, click "Continue Anyway" if warned that the network is insecure.
5. When done, click "OK" to close the wireless network connection property dialog box.
