Windows XP Taskbar - Toolbar - Start Menu

Toggle Grouping Taskbar Buttons

SUMMARY: Toggle Windows XP's group of related software on the Taskbar.

Normally, if you are running many software packages in Windows XP and have several windows of the same type open, such as several browser windows, several open folders, etc., Windows XP will try to save space on the Windows Taskbar and group these buttons together. This way, instead of seeing a button for every web browser window on your Taskbar, you will only see one button. Clicking that button will bring up a menu allowing you to choose which web browser window to activate.

While many people like this grouping feature, others would rather fill the Taskbar with multiple buttons as they find it easier to switch between open programs this way. To toggle taskbar button grouping on or off:

1. Right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and choose "Properties".

2. When the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box appears, select the "Taskbar" tab.

3. Check or uncheck "Group similar taskbar buttons" as desired.

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
