Windows XP Taskbar - Toolbar - Start Menu - Stop Accidentally Moving Programs in the Start Menu

Windows XP lets you drag and drop program links from one Start Menu folder underneath "All Programs" to another. This way, you can move all your games to a "Games" folder, all productivity applications to an "Office" folder, etc.

However, if you are using a laptop Touchpad or a mouse that won't stay still, you may have found yourself accidentally moving programs from one menu to another without meaning to do so. This can be quite irritating as it is very easy for the Start Menu to then collapse after files have been moved, meaning you will have to reopen the Start Menu and search to see where you mistakenly moved a particular program's icon.

Luckily, you can tweak Windows XP to ignore drag and drop operations from the Start Menu, meaning the above scenario should no longer happen to you.

1. Right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and choose "Properties".

2. When the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box appears, select the "Start Menu" tab.

3. Click the "Customize" button.

4. When the "Customize Start Menu" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Advanced" tab.

5. Under "Start Menu Items", scroll down and uncheck "Enable dragging and dropping".

6. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.
