Windows XP Taskbar - Toolbar - Start Menu - Display the Start Menu as One Long Menu or Multiple Columns

SUMMARY: Do you want all of your Programs listed simultaneously on the Windows XP Start Menu, or do you find such a display overwhelming?

Depending on your configuration, if you have a large amount of applications installed on your Windows XP machine, one of two things will occur when you click the Start menu and select "All Programs":

A) The Start Menu may appear in two columns as exemplified by the image on the right. In extreme cases, three or more columns may appear if you have very many applications installed on your machine!


B) The Start Menu will appear as one column. However, arrows will appear above and below the list of applications, allowing you to scroll through your installed software.

To switch between these two behaviors, do the following:

1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar, choosing "Properties".

2. The multi-tabbed "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box appears. Click the "Start Menu" tab.

3. Make sure the "Start Menu" radio button is checked, and then click its "Customize" button.

4. The multi-tabbed "Customize Start Menu" dialog box appears. Click the "Advanced" tab.

5. Underneath "Start menu items" scroll down to "Scroll Programs". Check this box to display one column; uncheck this box to display all installed software simultaneously in multiple columns.

5. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.
