Windows XP and Explorer

Customize the Explorer Toolbar Window

SUMMARY: Add useful buttons to Explorer folders in Windows XP.

By default, your Windows XP Explorer toolbar windows contain buttons to search for files, move to the parent folder, move to the most previously accessed folder, and more. However, there are more options available and you can add toolbar buttons to:

* Toggle full-screen mode
* Map or disconnect drives
* Move file(s)
* Copy file(s)
and more.

To customize the buttons on the Explorer toolbar:

1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop to open the "My Computer" window.

2. Choose "View" - "Toolbars" - "Customize".

3. A "Customize Toolbar" dialog box will appear.

* To add an available button to the toolbar, click on the button and press the "Add" button.

* To remove a button from the current toolbar buttons, click on the button and press the "Remove" button.

* To rearrange buttons on the toolbar, click on a button you wish to move. Click the "Move Up" button to move the toolbar button towards the left side of the toolbar. Click the "Move Down" button to move the toolbar button towards the right side of the toolbar.

* You can also add "Separator" buttons that will draw lines between groups of buttons on the toolbar.

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

If you have increased the number of buttons on the toolbar you may need to resize it to fit the newly-available buttons.

1. Uncheck "View" - "Toolbars" - "Lock the Taskbar".

2. Move your mouse pointer to the toolbar divider, on the right-side of the buttons, until the pointer becomes a double-arrow. Click and drag the toolbar divider to the right to increase the size of the toolbar to make more buttons available.

3. When you are satisfied with your changed, it's recommended to re-check "View" - "Toolbars" - "Lock the Taskbar".
