Windows XP and Printers - Configure Your Printer Driver to Recognize Photo Paper

SUMMARY: Ensure your color printer can effectively use glossy or photo paper when printing photographs with Windows XP.

When you print pictures with Windows XP using glossy or photo paper, the results should be better than when using regular paper. The photos should be crisper and show more detail. If this does not happen when you insert photo paper into your printer, you may need to configure your printer to recognize the use of such paper.

1. Click "Start", selecting "Printers and Faxes".

2. Choose your printer - right-click it and select "Properties".

3. When the "Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "General" tab.

4. Click the button "Printing Preferences".

5. From here, the dialog box looks different depending on the printer and driver. Look for a "Paper" or "Media" tab. From here, you should be able to choose the most appropriate paper type from a list.

6. When done, click "OK" to close the dialog box.

Note that if your paper does not exactly match the type of paper listed in your printer preferences, you may need to experiment. Consult your printer manual for more information.
