ZoneAlarm Pro

Delete your Cache Files

SUMMARY: Use ZoneAlarm Pro to remove Internet and other cache files from your computer.

This tip was written for ZoneAlarm Pro version 6.5.722.000. Instructions may differ for your version.


ZoneAlarm Pro includes a Cache Cleaner that can remove temporary Internet files generated by using Internet Explorer and Netscape, plus other cache items generated by your machine. These can be removed to help protect your privacy, especially if other people have access to your computer.

First, find out the cache files ZoneAlarm Pro will remove so you don't accidentally delete files or settings you want kept:

1. Double-click the "ZA" icon on your taskbar.

2. Click "Privacy" in the left pane of the "ZoneAlarm Pro" window that appears.

3. Click the "Cache Cleaner" tab.

4. Click the "Custom" button.

5. The "ZoneAlarm Pro Cache Cleaner Options" dialog box will appear with three tabs complete with many cache options. Check a box to enable cleaning of said option from Zone Alarm Pro. The tabs and options are:

Hard Drive:
* Document history
* Recycle Bin
* Temporary files directory
* Windows Find/Search history
* Windows Scandisk file fragments
* Windows Media Player history
* Start->"Run" history

IE/MSN:
* Temporary Internet Files (cache)
* URL history
* AutoComplete forms
* AutoComplete passwords
* Locked index.dat files
* Typed URL history
* IE/MSN cookies (by clicking the "Select" button you can let ZoneAlarm Pro keep certain cookies)

Netscape:
* File cache
* URL history
* Mail trash
* Forms data
* Cookies (by clicking the "Select" button you can let ZoneAlarm Pro keep certain cookies)

6. Once you have decided which files and settings to remove, click "OK" to close the "ZoneAlarm Pro Cache Cleaner Options" dialog box.

Now clean the cache.

1. Click the "Clean Now" button.

2. If you wish, check "Clean cache automatically every" and enter the number of days ZoneAlarm Pro should wait between automatically deleting the cache entries.

3. Click the "X" at the top-right to close the ZoneAlarm Pro window.
