ZoneAlarm Standard And Pro

Stop Automatically Checking for Updates

SUMMARY: Require ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro updates to only be manually obtained.

This tip was written for ZoneAlarm version 6.5.731.000. Instructions may differ for your version.

Normally, ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro automatically checks for updates whenever you first access the Internet in a computing session. While this may be beneficial in that you are able to get security fixes and software performance enhancements as soon as they are released, you may want to disable this automatic polling for privacy reasons or if you are using a dial-up Internet connection. To disable this setting:

1. Double-click the "ZA" icon on your taskbar.

2. Click "Overview" in the left pane of the "ZoneAlarm" or "ZoneAlarm Pro" window that appears.

3. Click the "Preferences" tab.

4. Click the "Manually" radio button next to "Check for product updates"

5. Click the "X" at the top-right to close the ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro window.

If you perform this tweak, you should still frequently manually check for updates:

1. Double-click the "ZA" icon on your taskbar.

2. Click "Overview" in the left pane of the "ZoneAlarm" or "ZoneAlarm Pro" window that appears.

3. Click the "Preferences" tab.

4. Click the "Check for Updates" button.

5. Click the "X" at the top-right to close the ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro window.
